Hemoglobin level indicates oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. Hemoglobin in normal range suggests Good oxygencarrying capacity of the blood. Pink palms, Pink tongue, no pallor on palpabral conjunctival side of the eyes suggests clinical normal Hemoglobin. In patients who have lost blood these sites will show pallor.  Patient with normal hemoglobin may show pale areas like the way it happens when person is frightened. Patient with low hemoglobin is labelled as anemic. He will look pale, may have ankle swelling and may become breathless with slight exertion.Obviously Good hemoglobin levels are essential for good healing. Patients who have lost hemoglobin over long period of time like in bleeding piles cases or menstrual disorders will show very low hemoglobin. Nutritional deficiencies should be corrected to correct hemoglobin. Unless the case is a emergency it is always better to correct hemoglobin levels before surgery is opted for. Or Surgery can be done under local anesthesia like in bleeding piles.
