Cancer of the colon is one of the very common malignancy found in world Population. Internationally famous personalities who had afflication by this disease included Audrey Hepburn (appendix), Moshe Dayan, Ronald Regan. Even the most powerful in the world were not spared by  this disease
Many a times this disease is detected late in stages because early symptoms are ignored.
Altered bowel habit is most common presentation. Altered coloured blood( black- malena) in motion is another common symptom. Certain hereditary conditions or pre-existing diseases increase the risk of development of this disease in certain population. Palpable lump in right lower abdomen with anemia is a very common finding in Caecal ( proximal colon) cancer. Pain may not appear unless the lumen is obstructed or growth is infiltrating the surrounding structures. Distension of abdomen may appear with ascites or obstruction. Weight loss, loss of appetite are other common symptoms which are common occurance in many malignancies. Weight loss may be significant and is easily noticed by friends and relatives. .
Diagnosis is made by high degree of suspicion. Barium enema  is easily available investigation even at Taluka places. It shows  type of Colonic problem.  Colonoscopy with biopsy is the investigation of choice. After confirmation of diagnosis USG abdomen, and CT abdomen done for investigational staging. Tumour marker assessment is done which is useful for Postoperative monitoring. Surgery can give Curative benefit in early stages. Surgery has great benefit even for palliative purpose. Radiotherapy , chemotherapy Endoscopic stent placement are the other modalities used as supportive measures.
To achieve Best results in Indian Population large scale awareness programme related to early detection are necessary.
