There are many kidney function tests. All cannot be done as Screening tests. In general before surgeries unrelated to Kidney Blood Ura( nitrogen) and serum creatinine tests are done to assess the kidney function in general. Passing urine repeatedly is not necessarily a sign of perfectly normal kidneys. Kidneys which cannot filter out waste products satisfactorily may pass huge amount of low specific gravity urine though blood urea and serum creatinine levels may be very high.
These blood tests are always supplemented by urine complete examination.
Normal blood urea and serum creatinine levels are essential for good healing.
Extra precautions are essential in case of abnormal kidney function tests.
